Quilt First then embly?

I am trying to find insructions on making a quilt with approx. 6" square, sandwiched with batting and backing, that are machine quilted then all squares are sewn together without the raw seams being shown on the back (like the rag quilts). Does anyone know what I am talking about and can help with this. Thanks so much!
